Do you have an employee who is covered under ADA but is challenged in completing work tasks? An onsite assessment may assist you in identifying ways the employee can increase productivity and meet job expectations with recommendations by a Vocational Specialist. VocWorks/CareWorks USA can provide on-site job review with the employee and employer to provide recommendations so employers can determine reasonable accommodations.

A Master’s Level Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor completes each assessment taking into consideration:

The needs of the employee;

The specific disability; and,

The essential functions of the position in question (as identified by the employer and the work environment).

Following completion of the assessment, a report will be provided to include:

Reason For Referral/Accommodation Request;

Barriers to Job Performance; and,

Recommendations

The ADA defines “disability” discrimination to include “not making reasonable accommodations to the known physical or mental limitations of an otherwise qualified individual with a disability, unless such covered entity can demonstrate the accommodation would impose an undue hardship on the operation of the business.”

Although the definition of disability has not changed, the meaning of the terms included in the definition have. Disability is defined under the ADA as:

A physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life
activities of an individual.

A record of such an impairment.

Being regarded as having an impairment.

While the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) preserves the traditional language defining “disability” found in the ADA – a covered disability is one which “substantially limits one or more major life activities” – it has changed the meaning of these words to expand the number of employees who will be covered.

In doing so, the ADAAA removes requirements imposed by Supreme Court decisions that had the effect of reducing protections for certain people with disabilities. Employers should be certain their human resources departments are well-trained on the ADAAA and the broad standard that must now be used to determine if an individual is “qualified” under ADA.

According to a recent ODG (Official Disability Guideline) study, outcomes for both work-related and non work-related injuries are shown to be worse where other health conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, depression and obesity exist. Early identification of comorbidities can allow an employer to engage the right resources to manage a claim resulting in lower claim costs.

Additionally, National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI) studies clearly demonstrate the impact of early case management.

Intervention reduces claim costs by 23% and increases closure rates by 27%.

Injured employees whose claims are not medically managed are away from work an average of 27 weeks longer than employees with “limited” or “full” medical case management.

Medical Triage & Telephonic Case Management

Medical Triage completed by our certified Nurse Case Managers provides an employer with a number of medical opinions. This can include documentation on comorbidities, the anticipated medical condition, its relationship to the mechanism of injury and the anticipated medical treatment based on expected treatment parameter and recommendations focused on the avoidance of disability.

This initial “snapshot” of a claim provides you, the employer, with valuable information allowing sound decisions to be made with regard to claim allowances and initial treatment parameters.

“Telephonic Case Management” utilized within the first 30 days of a complex medical-only or a lost time claim is an effective way to ensure the injured worker, the employer and the physician are working together for the most timely and cost effective resolution to the claim.

CareWorks USA and VocWorks’ telephonic Nurse Case Managers will:

Ensure a 3-point contact is completed within the 24-48 hrs of the referral

Assist in the determination of the appropriate treatment for the allowed conditions of the claim

Provide a written plan within 24-48 hours outlining treatment recommendations, documentation of pre-existing illness or injury unrelated to the claim that could impact the healing process and return to work options and time lines.

Make recommendations as to whether an IME or FCM is appropriate and which will bring the most expedient claim resolution.

National Coverage

The CareWorks Family of Companies provides Medical Triage and Telephonic Case Management to customers across the USA. Our team of Nurse Case Managers has an average of 20 years experience. We are a vital part of managing and reducing the costs associated with both work and non work related injuries.

For more information regarding medical triage and telephonic case management contact your CareWorks USA or VocWorks Account Executive today.

VocWorks has partnered with the Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission (RSC), Coleman Rehabilitation, and the Stark County Mental Health and Recovery Services Board in a VRP3 Project beginning October 1, 2010 through September 30, 2011. The Vocational Rehabilitation Public & Private Partnerships (VRP3) Program, formerly Pathways, allows RSC to form partnerships and establish cooperative agreements that will generate new, high-quality vocational rehabilitation (VR) programs, expand services to people with significant disabilities and maximize federal match funding for Ohio. Through VRP3, local government entities can partner with RSC to provide VR services in their areas.

Every dollar the agency receives in state or local funding generates $3.69 in federal money for VR services to people with significant disabilities. The federal money generated through VRP3 must be spent in the jurisdictions of grant recipients. Federal funds generated from state dollars are used statewide. Participants must have RSC-approved individual employment plans, and the projects are reviewed annually.

VRP3 allows RSC to maintain services and keep needed federal dollars in Ohio while allowing local partners to expand services.

Modified Duty Off-Site (MDOS) Customer Testimonial

VocWorks’ MDOS program has been a successful transitional duty program for hundreds of our clients across the country. Our unique return to work alternative program has reduced the cost and duration of lost-time incidences. In fact, the testimonials below testify to the success of the program.

“The Modified Duty Off-Site (MDOS) Program is a unique program offered by VocWorks/CareWorks USA to assist us in returning our employees back to work following an on-the-job injury. With this being the first opportunity for our organization to provide mod- ified duty to our employees, the VocWorks/CareWorks USA staff was very helpful in assisting us in developing guidelines and initiating the program. The dedicated Off-Site Placement Coordinator secured placement of our employees promptly, and the hands-on coordination from the Nurse Case Manager was vital to provide a team coordination of the process. I have found the VocWorks/CareWorks USA team to be very responsive to our needs when issues arise. For us, the placement of our employees with a non-profit organization is a win-win sit- uation and the non-profit organizations are very happy to have an extra set of hands for help. I would recommend this program to any employer who recognizes that transitional return to work programs offer both physical and mental therapeutic benefits that accelerate the reha- bilitative process for an injured worker. We have seen this happen with the help of the VocWorks/CareWorks USA MDOS program.”
Cassens Transport Company

“When you can’t accommodate your injured employee’s restrictions, MDOS can.”
