At times, an injured employee is not capable of a full and immediate return to his or her previous job because of physical limitations or restrictions due to a work related injury. Sometimes the employer may have a light-duty available, but more often transitional work is an appropriate option.
Transitional work is a structured program, which is time limited, focused on gradually increasing job demands and work tasks. This allows an injured employee to return to their original employment site and, whenever possible, to their original job.
A licensed therapist evaluates the physical abilities of the injured employee while assessing the job for its physical demands. A program is established to modify the job or gradually increase the work tasks while conditioning the injured employee to increase his or her physical abilities. The program is focused at educating the employee to prevent re-injury and adjust to returning to work.
The employee and employer are both positively impacted by this facilitated approach to returning injured employees to productive work. A Transitional Work Plan also controls costs and helps to ensure compliance with the American Disabilities Act.
VocWorks has unique and specialized understanding of the importance of Transitional Work in facilitating an early and successful return to work. Our professional staff work with the employer, employees, and if applicable, the union to analyze job options and develop a plan for bringing employees back to full ability, promptly and safely.
Transitional Work Plans include:
- Job evaluation to assess the physical demands of the work.
- Progressive job conditioning to strengthen the employees physical capabilities.
- On-site work activity increasing the work demands or modifying the job.
- Safe work practice training to prevent re-injury.
- Work re-adjustment necessary for the employees changes in returning to work and fear of re-injury.
While transitional work plans can be developed at any time, VocWorks encourages a proactive, pre-injury approach to implementing a structured plan.
Our staff will work with the employer, union and front-line employees to design a customized plan suitable for your situation. When an injury occurs, pre-injury planning facilitates the employer and employee through the program steps for a speedy and safe return to work.
